The AKM was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1950's. It fires the 7.62x39mm cartridge at a rate of fire of 600 rounds per minute. In 1959, this upgraded variant replaced its outdated AK-47 counterpart that was in service at that time. In the 1970's, the AKM was replaced by the new AK-74 assault rifle which was chambered in the smaller caliber hollow point 5.45x39mm round. The AKM remains in service with Russia as a reserve weapon, and in police forces. It is in widespread use by the militaries of other countries.
The AKM looks a lot like the AK-47, and the two would easily be mistaken for each other at first glance if the stocks of the weapons were not different. The AKM has a skeletal stock and a wooden foregrip. It has nearly identical sights to the AK-47 assault rifle as well. The receiver of the AKM is almost the same as that of the AK-47. The main differences lies in the performance of the two seperate weapons, where the AKM exceeds the AK-47 in most aspects.
The AKM has a a moderate amount of recoil, and a moderate amount of aimed accuracy. The weapon is effective at a medium range, longer than that of the AK-47 and OTs-14, but shorter than all other 7.62x39mm weapons. It has a moderate fire rate, the same as most other 7.62x39mm weapons. The AKM exceeds at CQC, however, due to its exceptioanlly high hip fire accuracy. The weapon accepts 30, 40, and 75 round magazines.
The AKM should be used mainly in close quarters combat, due to its high hip fire accuracy. Its moderate fire rate also helps when used at these ranges. The AKM is also an acceptable medium range weapon, having enough range and accuracy when aiming to take down most targets at medium ranges. Its somewhat low recoil makes the weapon able to be controlled for a short period of time when using automatic fire, even though short bursts with the weapon are recommended.
- The AKM is the most widely produced model of the Kalashnikov series of rifles.
- In real life, this particular variant of the AKM is known as the AKMS (S – Skladnoy – Folding).
